As the pre-season looms just two days ahead I'd like to say a few words.
YES, FINALLY SOME FOOTBALL.
&
Here's what kind of year I think we'll have. I'm excited. I'm a homer. I'll list 31 reasons why fans of the other teams are rooting for the wrong team. I'd like to think that we have the team on paper (barring injuries) where we can at least give any team a run for their money. The East will not be a cakewalk this year. Not by a long shot. Not for any team. Yes, this includes the Bills.
We had three major issues on this team over the off-season in my opinion. Receiver, Linebacker, and DB. We went out and nabbed the two biggest names in those positions (that of Dansby and Marshall, obviously) and we have a 2nd year FS by the name of Chris Clemons ready to knock some skulls together. I'd go and look for the interview, but that's really beyond the scope of this article.
So, what is the scope of this article? I'm excited for football. I'll tell you why.
We pick Odrick, a man who Jo Pa has called (paraphrasing) "one of the best Lions he has ever seen". With a man who has been around as long as he has and coached as many good/great defensive players that's a huge compliment.
In the second round we sprinted to the podium to pick up Koa Misi. In my mind they knew exactly who they wanted there. It didn't take long at all. If I recall he is slated to play the Sam backer opposite Cam Wake. These guys are young and they are fast. Inside we've got Dansby (on the weakside) and Crowder on the strong. This could all change, of course, but I like the way it is looking so far.
In the third round we picked up an absolute refrigerator of a guard in John Jerry. 6'6'' 330 some pounds? Dear god. I think our Oline has a chance to be great.
I sit here and I try and think of weaknesses.
FS. Maybe LB if our rookies don't pan out. Other than that I really can't see it. Or I don't want to see it. We're 0-0 right now and we've got a fighting chance. We've got just as much of a chance as any team in the league IMO, and I really don't think that's homerism talking. Yes, there will be teams who will give us a run for our money. Yes there will be teams that will beat us. I'm not saying we're going 19-0 and we're going to steamroll every team that comes into town.
But I believe we can make the playoffs. And so long as the injury bug stays in the pre-season or early on and we can get out to a good start.. 3-1, 2-2 (the two wins being the division games) I think we're primed to get in the playoffs. And once you make the playoffs... anything can happen.

. I don't know too many guards that come in and light the world on fire, but he's definitely another guy in the mix to fix the internal line issues.

Latest word I read on Jerry is that he is not taking the world by storm. Nothing disappointing, just rookie learning curve stuff, just so you know. But we have Thomas, Incognito, etc. at guard. We also have possibly one of the better tackle tandems in the league. All that is left to see is how nose tackle works out and by all accounts, we only need to see if Starks can hold up physically because all indications say that he is holding the position down.
One other thing. With Dobbins added, look for Crowder to possibly step up as he is being pushed. Or he will step aside and become depth. Either way, somebody will be looking over their shoulder at MLB as they try to keep their spot next to Dansby, and that is a good thing.
All teams have question marks going in, and injuries through the year. We are no different. But it looks good for us and our team now has a foundation to compete at the highest level for years to come.
