I know we gave him a big contract. I often hear about his big contract (and little production), so I'm wondering what the hit is and why it works out to that number. I know we have room for such a hit, but just so I understand could the rules for the cap hit be explained a bit?

Wilford's original contract included a 6 million signing bonus, pro-rated at 1.5 mil a year..... he is in the 2nd year of his deal, so we have 4.5 million left of prorated signing bonus to count against the cap.
BEFORE he was cut, his salary this year was 1.5 million in base salary + 1.5 million in signing bonus proration so Wilford counted 3 million towards the cap in total.
After cutting him, we saved the 1.5 mil in base salary, but would have to take the remaining prorated signing bonus as a dead cap hit which would be 4.5 million. Because Wilford is a post June 1 cut, 1.5 million of the 4.5 million will count towards this years dead cap and 3 million of the 4.5 million will count towards next years dead cap.
Thats nothing at all. I found it a little silly earlier this season when people were talking that we couldnt cut him because of the cap hit. For comparison, we released Holliday which cost us 2.5 million in dead cap space. Michael Lehan cost us 3.3 million in dead cap space. McCown cost us 1.25 million in dead cap space. And Jason Taylor costs us 2.5 million in dead cap space from his last contract with Miami.

We are about 10 million under counting the top 51.
Im waiting until we come with the final roster before I send the cap page to Padre.

Thanks for the update! I really hope we can add another piece or two for teh OL after teams make their cuts and then keep a few million to sign players because of injury and then lets push that money forward

Yes. I wonder if we will pickup a backup C or G after this week's cuts we made at o-line.
Thanks for the explanation, Phil.
